I usually make it for my 18 month old when in need of a quick breakfast or lunch or dinner. You can add grated veggies like carrot, cabbage or chopped bell peppers, spinach etc for added nutrition.
If you’re making these for kids/toddlers , you can omit the green chilis, and add in chopped spinach, grated carrots or cabbage!
When making solely for adults you can add grated ginger, grated garlic and asafoteida in addition to all the other ingredients.

Ingredients
Oil or ghee to fry
1/2 cup wheat Sooji / semolina
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup curd / yogurt
Salt to taste
1 medium onion chopped
1 small tomato chopped
1 green chili cut into half
2 tablespoons coriander leaves chopped
2 tbsp carrot grated (Optional)
2 tbsp capsicum chopped (Optional)
1 tsp ginger grated (Optional)
1 tsp garlic grated/ minced (Optional)
1/4 tsp asafoteida (Optional)
Directions
- In a mixing bowl, add sooji, water, curd and mix well. Let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, chop all the veggies(Onion, tomato, chili, coriander) and after 10 minutes add it to the sooji, curd mixture.
- Add salt and mix everything well.
- Heat a large flat skillet over medium high heat and add about 1 tsp of oil. Once the oil is hot, use a ladle to pour the batter onto the center of the pan. Use the back of the ladle to shape the batter into a circle.
- Let the uttapam cook for about 2 minutes and then drizzle a tiny bit of oil/ghee around the edges of it ( -swirling the pan around so the oil is evenly distributed). Flip, let it cook and brown on the opposite side and remove from heat.
- Serve the uttapam warm with some chutney of choice.
Notes
- If you’re making these for kids, you can omit the green chilis, and add in chopped spinach, grated carrots or cabbage!
- You can even add grated ginger, garlic and asafoteida.
- I skip the optional ingredients under ingredients list when making it for my toddler.
