Jeera Rice | Zeera Rice |Cumin Rice

Jeera Rice/ Zeera rice is one of the easiest flavored rice you can make and is an excellent accompaniment with all dishes. Jeera or Zeera rice is a popular Indian dish made of basmati rice slightly spiced and flavored with lots of cumin seeds.

This recipe makes the perfect jeera rice and is the only one you’ll need when you want fluffy, perfectly cooked rice which is full of flavor, but super simple to make.

Ingredients for Jeera/Zeera rice recipe

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water.
  • 2 tbsp ghee/clarified butter
  • 1tbsp jeera/cumin seeds
  • 2-inch cinnamon stick
  • 2 cardamom
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 3-4 mint leaves chopped
  • 1/3 cup of chopped coriander leaves ( add most of it while cooking..remaining add when serving.)
  • salt to taste

How to make Zeera/Jeera Rice

  1. Wash rice until water runs clear, then soak it in enough water so that the rice is completely soaked and has an inch of extra water on top.
  2. Soak for 20-30 mins.
  3. When you are ready to cook, drain all the water from the rice and set the rice aside.

How to make Zeera/Jeera rice in a traditional way

  1. Heat ghee in a pot and add the whole spices(bay leaf and cinnamon and cardamom) and cumin seeds to it. ( use oil to make this recipe vegan).
  2. Once the cumin seeds start spluttering, add the chopped green chilies, mint leaves, and coriander leaves and drained rice to it.
  3. Saute the rice in the pan for two minutes on a medium flame. This helps to add more flavor to the rice.
  4. Add two cups of water and salt to the rice and mix well. Bring the rice to a quick boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for approximately five to six minutes, till all the water, has evaporated and the rice is cooked through. Top with chopped coriander and serve hot.

How to make Jeera/Zeera rice in a Pressure cooker.

  1. Heat Ghee in a pressure cooker.
  2. Add bay leaf, cinnamon, and cardamom and saute them for a few seconds.
  3. Then add cumin seeds, when they start to splutter add the chopped green chilies, mint leaves, and coriander leaves and drained rice to it. Mix well and saute the rice.
  4. Add two cups of water and salt to the rice.
  5. Bring water to a boil on high flame.
  6. Cover the pressure cooker with lid. Cook on high heat for one whistle. For al dente rice release the pressure carefully after 2 mins with the help of a wooden spatula.
  7. when the pressure goes off, open the lid and fluff the rice with a fork
  8. Top with coriander leaves and serve hot with any of your favorite curries.

How to make Jeera/Zeera Rice in a Rice Cooker with saute mode

  1. Plugin the Rice cooker and select saute mode.
  2. Add Ghee, once it melts add bay leaf, cinnamon, and cardamom and saute them for a few seconds.
  3. Then add cumin seeds, when they start to splutter add the chopped green chilies, mint leaves, and coriander leaves and drained rice to it. Mix well and saute the rice.
  4. Add two cups of water and salt to the rice.
  5. Now close the lid of the rice cooker and change the settings from saute mode to rice mode.
  6. Let it cook in white rice mode as usual.
  7. After it’s done, mix and fluff the rice well and top with chopped coriander and serve hot.

How to make Jeera/Zeera rice in Instant Pot ( I have Instant pot Ultra )

  1. Select the Saute mode(set heat to medium ) and heat ghee in the inner pot.
  2. Add bay leaf, cinnamon, and cardamom and saute them for a few seconds.
  3. Then add cumin seeds, when they start to splutter add the chopped green chilies, mint leaves, and coriander leaves and drained rice to it. Mix well and saute the rice. (if making in instant pot then soak rice for about 10-15mins).
  4. change the heat setting in saute mode to low
  5. Add two cups of water and salt to the rice.
  6. Turn off the saute mode and let the instant pot cool down completely before pressure cooking.
  7. once it cools down, secure the lid and pressure cook on high for 5 mins or use rice mode to cook.
  8. After it’s done, mix and fluff the rice well and top with chopped coriander and serve hot.
