Matar Chaat | Ragda Chaat | White Peas Gravy Chaat

Matar chaat or Ragda chaat is a unique white pea based curry chaat recipe made with chopped onions, tomatoes and a blend of spices. It is a popular street food chaat recipe.

Matar Chaat is a lip-smacking dish that is typically enjoyed as chaat, which means snack in Hindi, and, it also makes for a light and fulfilling meal when served with a side of naan or kulcha which are delicious Indian flatbreads.

Protein, Fiber, Iron-rich and vegan & gluten-free

Dried White Peas belong to the family of legumes.

  1. Dried white peas are filled with fiber.
  2. These legumes are packed with protein and protein provides amino acids which are the building blocks of our cells.
  3. These peas are inevitably iron-rich, which will help prevent anemia and increase your hemoglobin levels or red blood cell count.
  4. Dried white peas are a valuable source of vitamin B1.
  5. White peas contain phosphorus, which works closely with calcium in building bones.
  6. These peas contain zinc. Zinc is an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, prevent cancer and promote hair growth.
  7. And they are free of fat, vegan and gluten-free.

Ingredients

For the Gravy

  1. 1 Cup Dried White Peas soaked (also known as yellow peas/ white vatana/ dried peas).
  2. 2 tbsp Oil.
  3. A tsp Mustard Seeds.
  4. A tsp Fennel Seeds.
  5. 1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste (or a tbsp of chopped ginger and garlic).
  6. 1 Onion finely chopped.
  7. 2 Tomatoes finely chopped.
  8. 1 tsp Red chili powder.
  9. 1 tsp Coriander powder.
  10. 1/4 tsp Turmeric.
  11. 1/2 tsp Black Pepper powder.
  12. 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder.
  13. Salt to taste.
  14. Coriander leaves (a few chopped).

For garnish

  1. Broken puri or crushed samosa.
  2. onion finely chopped.
  3. tomato finely chopped.
  4. a few drops of lemon juice.
  5. sev.
  6. coriander leaves finely chopped.

Instructions

  1. Wash and Soak the Dried White Peas overnight.
  2. Drain the water. Add fresh water to soak the peas along with salt and pressure cook it allowing for 4-5 whistles.
  3. Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or same cooker. Add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter, then add fennel seeds. To this now add ginger garlic paste and saute for a minute.
  4. Then add finely chopped onions and saute till the onions turn transparent. Then add chopped tomato.
  5. After adding tomato, add salt to taste along with red chili powder, coriander powder, and turmeric powder and mix everything well. Allow the tomatoes to cook till it gets mushy.
  6. Then, add cooked peas and mix well. Add 2 cups of water and stir well. Keep the flame low and allow the peas to cook in low flame for 10-12 minutes. The peas will absorb the masala and the gravy thickens a bit.
  7. After 10 minutes, add pepper powder, garam masala and stir well, add chopped coriander leaves and switch off the flame.
  8. The matar masala or white peas gravy is now ready.

Serving Suggestion

  1. Just before serving, put broken puris as the base in a plate, then add white peas gravy and garnish with freshly chopped onions, tomato, lemon juice, sev, and coriander.
  2. The delicious Street Style Matar Chaat or White Peas Masala Gravy Chaat is ready to serve!

Notes: Another serving suggestion, you can also serve this Matar Chaat with Naan or Kulcha and make a meal out of it.
